The Madrid government has allocated €450 million for the purchase of 40 modern trains, enhancing the city’s transportation network. According to Regional Minister Jorge Rodrigo, the automated metro trains will improve speed and accessibility across the network.
Each new train can accommodate up to 1,385 passengers, which is 17% more than current models. The increased speed, up by 33%, is expected to reduce waiting times and shorten intervals.
Produced by CAF, the new trains promise a 20% energy savings, making them more environmentally sustainable. The train design provides spacious corridors, accessible to all passengers, including those with disabilities.

The design also emphasizes convenience with high-contrast colors and an auditory loop system. This feature helps passengers with hearing impairments better understand public announcements within metro cars.
Rodrigo noted that the last new trains were purchased in 2008, and this acquisition represents significant modernization. These automated metro trains will replace outdated models, such as the 5000 series.
The contract with CAF includes a 10-year maintenance plan, ensuring efficient operation of the trains. Additionally, Line 11 is planned to extend to Conde de Casal, with the project’s second phase starting soon.
An additional 40 trains will serve Line 1, running between Pinar de Chamartin and Valdecarros. This expansion has received a €500 million investment to accommodate passenger needs.
Madrid’s transportation network continues to expand and modernize, better meeting the needs of its residents. Implementing these new trains is a step toward increasing capacity and sustainability in the transit system.
These improvements will create a more accessible, efficient public transportation system for all city residents, enhancing daily commutes.
