Northlander project brings Ontario’s passenger rail revival
05.10.2025
Ontario has edged nearer to reviving the Northlander, finishing off a $5.7 million Northern Ontario Railway bypass in North Bay that saves trips and solidifies north Ontario’s long-hymned passenger links.
This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Northlander drives regional growth and safety binge
The Northlander project is still defining the future of transportation in the north. The new 982-meter track interlines the CN Newmarket Subdivision to Ontario Northland’s mainline, allowing trains to pass freight yards safely and efficiently.

This upgrade saves trips by roughly 15 minutes, saves crew time and life, and boosts passenger reliability. Since the line evades traffic, it assists in both operating performance and convenience. Officials praised it as an essential element of Ontario’s reconnection plan for its communities from Toronto to Timmins.
Ontario Northland CEO Chad Evans stated that the new piece “drives the Northlander program nearer to in-service.” He went on to say that 16 municipalities would directly see revitalized passenger service, Cochrane included.
Milestone northlander bolsters economy in northern Ontario
North Bay Mayor Peter Chirico described the bypass as “a transformative moment” that enhances road safety and triggers regional growth. Investment assists tourism, employment, and industry in the region because transport is the life-blood that powers growth.
Vic Fedeli, Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade for Ontario, highlighted that the project delivers on one of the province’s major election promises. “It gets us on our way to Toronto,” he added, in comments that reflected building railroad connections would keep access to opportunity and prosperity for workers and families in the north.
New passenger car testing is to commence in 2026, and service will commence afterwards following certification. Evans guaranteed that the fares will be in line with Ontario Northland’s present pricing model. “Piece by piece, we’re building back,” Fedeli stated. “The North is worth it, and it’ll have it back soon enough.”
