Newag is considering investing in an incinerator
02.02.2022
Rail vehicle manufacturer Newag intends to diversify its activities. The company is considering the possibility of building a plant for burning non-recyclable waste. Investments will amount to about half a billion zlotys.
According to Dobre Tygodnik Sądecki, the annual capacity of the waste incineration plant will be 90,000 tons, informd Railway Supply magazine, citing Rynek Kolejowy.
The plant will serve two main purposes: reduce overcrowding in the municipal landfill and generate power. First, it is the satisfaction of the needs of the plant. Any surplus can provide a source of heat for the Polish manufacturer. Carbon dioxide emissions and related costs will also be reduced.
In a statement to the press, Newag President Zbigniew Konieczek emphasizes that the company has been consistently implementing environmental changes for several years. “Several years ago we abandoned the factory boiler house in favor of district heating. We have also invested in photovoltaic installations at our plant in Nowy Sącz.

Preparations for investments have been underway since last year. The investor has already entered into preliminary agreements with the local government of the city and nearby municipalities. In the first days of February, information and consultation meetings will be held for the inhabitants of Nowy Sącz. To reduce the inconvenience of the investment and improve its public perception, a park is planned around the incinerator.
An on-site incinerator could be the starting point for a larger project. The main shareholder of Newag, Zbigniew Jakubas, intends to build three more similar facilities outside the Sącz region. — We have already chosen locations and conducted research. If we pass the administrative procedure, the investment will be completed in the next two years. Each of them costs more than half a billion zlotys,” the entrepreneur said.
