New York Updates Subway Fleet: 1,495 New Cars Included in the $7.6 Billion Plan. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has launched a major investment plan. New York updates subway fleet, dedicating $7.6 billion to purchase and maintain state-of-the-art rolling stock.
Replacing Outdated Cars with Advanced Technology
As part of this plan, 355 new cars will replace aging R68 and R68A series trains. These models, built by Westinghouse and Kawasaki in 1986–1989, are nearing the end of their service life. In addition, R62 and R62A series trains, produced by Kawasaki and Bombardier in 1983–1987, will also be retired and replaced with modern cars. This upgrade aims to enhance passenger experience and improve operational efficiency.

The new cars will feature CBTC, a cutting-edge communication-based train control system. This technology will increase safety and optimize train schedules, making the subway system more efficient. Introducing these updates is crucial for meeting the demands of a growing city.
Deliveries of New Cars from Kawasaki Have Already Begun
Currently, the subway is being upgraded with Kawasaki R211A, R211S, and R211T models. These cars are manufactured at Kawasaki’s U.S. facilities in Lincoln and Yonkers. While production started in 2023, deliveries are running two years behind schedule due to logistical challenges.
Out of the 1,612 cars planned under a framework agreement, 1,175 have already been ordered. Despite the delays, the MTA remains committed to providing a reliable and comfortable transportation system for commuters.
