Mr Nathan Davis, Trade and Investment Commissioner, Australian Trade and Investment Commission South Asia, Professor Ravi Ravitharan, Director of Monash Institute of Railway Technology, Mr Praveen Kumar, Managing Director, DFCCIL, Mr G D Bhagwani, Executive Director, Asset Management, DFCCIL.

The agreement, signed by Professor Ravi Ravitharan and Sri G D Bhagwani, will initiate joint work in railway engineering, focused on freight systems, sustainability, and wheel-rail interface advancements.

Both parties aim to create a Centre of Excellence to improve rail maintenance and infrastructure resilience. This center will promote smart transport systems that support economic growth and operational longevity.

Rail Technology development will benefit from Monash IRT’s expertise, which has helped transform Australia’s freight networks into global benchmarks. Their collaboration with DFCCIL aims to apply similar methods in India’s growing network.

Professor Ravitharan highlighted the opportunity to share proven strategies and develop joint heavy haul projects. He noted that this partnership combines strengths to solve complex infrastructure challenges.

DFCCIL Managing Director Shri Praveen Kumar said they will focus on building efficient freight corridors and reducing national transport costs. He emphasized their commitment to integrating intelligent rail systems.

Expanding India-Australia Cooperation in Rail Technology

Professor Craig Jeffrey added that Monash will continue to deepen its role in India’s research ecosystem. He stressed the value of delivering practical outcomes that benefit both countries’ infrastructure development.

The Monash–DFCCIL alliance builds upon several active collaborations, including the IITB-Monash Research Academy, the Australia-India Critical Minerals Hub, and projects with Tata Steel on smart manufacturing.

Rail Technology Research Supporting Freight Efficiency

Through this MoU, the partners will lead innovation in heavy haul operations and smart maintenance. Their work will directly influence national policies, reduce logistics costs, and support a greener transport future.

The alliance represents a step forward in building global rail expertise and aligning engineering excellence with long-term economic strategies.
