Nexus, the Metro operator, previously celebrated the arrival of the new fleet but now faces a setback. While investigations continue, they have described the suspension as a “temporary pause.”

Delays and Challenges with New Metro Trains

The new fleet of Metro trains, manufactured by Stadler in Switzerland, was meant to be fully operational by the end of 2023. However, delays in testing, driver training, and inflation-related issues have hindered the rollout.

Cathy Massarella, managing director of Nexus, commented on the complexities of introducing a new fleet, acknowledging that minor technical issues often arise during such transitions. She emphasized that the sophisticated diagnostic systems on the trains help quickly identify faults.

No Timeline for New Metro Trains’ Return to Service

At present, there is no timeline for when the New Metro Trains will be back in service. Massarella assured passengers that they are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

Mayor Kim McGuinness has expressed frustration on behalf of passengers, requesting daily updates from both Nexus and Stadler regarding the progress of repairs.
