New freight rail link between Hungary and Croatia
17.04.2023
ÖBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG) is launching a new rail freight service between Budapest, Hungary and Rijeka, Croatia. This new service is expected to benefit cargo flows in both directions. In addition, the connection also opens the way to the port of Koper, which can be reached by a short railway from Rijeka. With this line, RCG will triple the number of connections to the main Adriatic ports, as well as provide more opportunities for the Western Balkans-Central Europe rail link via Budapest. Railway Supply magazine writes about this with reference to RailFreight.
This new service, which is part of the RCGtransFER network, will run twice a week between the BILK terminal in Budapest and the port of Rijeka. In addition, the Austrian company recently opened a new office in Rijeka due to the growing demand for container shipping services. This office, RCG noted, can help process these growing demands faster and more efficiently.
When it comes to getting Hungary to the sea and ports, the new RCG service to Rijeka is not the first initiative. The Hungarian government has planned the construction of the AdriaPort railway terminal at the port of Trieste, which, together with Rijeka and Koper, is the most active port in the Adriatic. The total investment is 200 million euros, 45 of which will be financed by the Italian Recovery and Resilience Plan. Construction is expected to take about two years.
