New CBTC Railway Signaling System on Denmark’s S-Bahn
06.06.2023
The new CBTC signaling system on Denmark’s S-Bahn has improved punctuality by 2.1 percent compared to the same period last year, reports the railway portal Railway Supply, citing railtech.
“We see that even more passengers are arriving on time on the high-speed railway, which already had a very high punctuality,” says Peter Svendsen, Director of Operations at Banedanmark.
The Danish high-speed railway now operates entirely based on Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC), the latest generation of signaling systems for urban railways.

In the autumn of 2022, the final three sections were equipped with the new signaling system, and installation on the first section began in 2016. S-Bahn is part of the major Copenhagen railway operated by DSB, comprising lines A, B, Bx, C, E, F, and H.
In the first two months of 2023, customer punctuality reached 97 percent, which is historically high, according to the head of railway infrastructure.
With CBTC, traditional signals along the track disappear. The train operator receives signals directly on a screen in the train cabin through radio signals.
Additionally, the new technology means there is much less equipment on and around the tracks compared to the old analog signaling technology.
Thanks to the digital signaling system, trains can be brought closer together, traffic can be managed more efficiently, and service can be restored faster in case of delays, improving punctuality.
