Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) are taking steps to modernize their rolling stock with the aim of improving environmental performance, as reported by the railway portal Railway Supply.
As part of this initiative, ÖBB has entered into an agreement with Stadler to acquire 16 three-car Cityjet trains equipped with the contact-accumulator technology “FLIRT Akku.”

The cost of this deal amounted to up to 194 million euros. It is planned that these modern trains will be put into service on the Kamptalbahn line in Lower Austria starting from 2028.
This procurement is part of a larger agreement signed in July 2023, which envisions the acquisition of up to 120 FLIRT Akku family contact-accumulator trains at a total cost of 1.3 billion euros.
The Cityjet trains, designed to operate at speeds of up to 160 km/h, will be assembled at Stadler’s factory in Switzerland. They offer passenger amenities such as Wi-Fi access, power outlets, multifunctional areas, and free access for passengers with limited mobility.
These modern trains will contribute to reducing carbon emissions and saving up to 1.7 million liters of diesel fuel annually.
