Monitoring the Condition of Railways in Finland Using Trains
13.10.2023
Finland has introduced a monitoring system for the condition of railways shared by commercial trains, as reported by the railway portal Railway Supply.
In a pilot project for comprehensive railway infrastructure monitoring, commercial trains will be used to collect daily data from various railway sections.
Tender announced for the purchase of new carriages for the Kharkiv Metro
The pilot project focuses on monitoring the condition of elements such as insulation joints, turnouts, and detecting rail defects and fractures.
It will also identify changes in the stiffness of the supporting structures and locations causing railway instability.
The project’s goal is to study the benefits of continuous monitoring of railway infrastructure to enable a rapid and cost-effective response to network defects and to determine the optimal timing for proactive technical maintenance.
The pilot project consists of a completed three-month preparatory stage and a year-long measurement and monitoring period. VR FleetCare, in collaboration with EKE-Electronics, provides this service to the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency (FTIA).
Measurement equipment has been installed on locomotive Sr2, which is operated by VR.
Data from this measuring equipment will be analyzed using the SmartVision™ platform by EKE-Electronics. This equipment also provides real-time monitoring of the locomotive’s bogies and drive motors.
