31.01.2025
The Mexican government has announced the construction of passenger rail lines starting in April. The Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation (SICT) confirmed this plan earlier this week. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Passenger Rail Lines to Enhance National Transportation
Mexico City-Querétaro and Mexico City-Pachuca routes are set to begin operations by 2027. The announcement aligns with President Claudia Sheinbaum’s commitment to expanding the nation’s railway network.

Sheinbaum previously revealed plans in November, outlining three routes for April construction. The government has allocated ₱157 billion ($7.59 billion)for railway projects in 2025 to support this expansion.
Officials confirmed that bidding rules for both projects will be published before April. The ministry is focused on selecting qualified contractors and ensuring construction begins without unnecessary delays.
Government Strategy for Expanding Passenger Rail Lines
Additional railway projects, Querétaro-Irapuato and Saltillo-Nuevo Laredo, are also included in the national infrastructure plan. Bidding for these projects is expected to be launched in June and July.
The upcoming rail lines will be dedicated exclusively to passenger transportation with one or two tracks. Government officials are prioritizing efficiency and accessibility to modernize public transport services.
During a recent press conference, Sheinbaum addressed concerns regarding land acquisition for the project. Some areas will require new land purchases, while others can utilize existing railway corridors.
She emphasized the need for discussions with freight rail concessionaires before construction begins. The administration is committed to avoiding disruptions to commercial train services during the project.
Officials believe expanding the railway network will bring economic growth and improve mobility. The project is expected to enhance connectivity between key regions and reduce travel times significantly.
Mexico’s growing demand for efficient transport solutions has made railway development a national priority. Policymakers see this initiative as a crucial step in modernizing the country’s infrastructure.
The Ministry of Infrastructure highlighted sustainability as a key factor in railway expansion. Passenger trains are considered a greener alternative to cars, helping to lower carbon emissions.
By promoting sustainable transit, the government aims to reduce urban congestion and air pollution. The railway project aligns with broader environmental goals to create a cleaner transport system.
Despite logistical challenges, officials are confident in their ability to meet project deadlines. The administration has committed to close monitoring of progress and adjusting strategies as necessary.
With rapid urbanization, Mexico sees modern railways as a necessary investment for future development. Authorities stress that careful planning is essential to ensure long-term success in transportation infrastructure.
The expansion of rail services represents a transformative moment for Mexico’s public transportation network. Officials believe this project will redefine travel experiences for millions of passengers nationwide.
