Metra fare collection pilot begins at downtown stations
20.03.2026
Metra fare collection pilot begins in April. Chicago’s Metra will test potential new fare-collection technology, according to Metra. Also, the pilot will gather data. Riders on selected trains at downtown stations will be stopped before boarding. They will tap a Ventra card or show a paper ticket.

How the Metra fare collection pilot will work?
One goal is to measure the new devices’ speed, functionality, and durability. Meanwhile, the devices will scan Ventra tickets and paper tickets, as Metro Magazine reported. At platform entrances, riders will show a launched Ventra ticket QR code. A valid paper ticket can be shown instead. The code or ticket will then be scanned.

In addition, the test is starting with off-peak trains. This step is meant to avoid boarding delays. If the initial runs go smoothly, Metra may expand the process to peak-period services.
Data collection and NITA fare integration
Separately, the pilot will track how many passengers use paper tickets and Ventra tickets on specified trains. It will also track when and where those tickets are bought. It will track their destinations as well.
At the same time, the checks could help fare collection on the trains. Conductors will still validate tickets. Still, they will not need to wait while riders launch Ventra tickets. That can speed up the process. For example, riders without a ticket will be asked to buy one before boarding.
The results may also assist NITA. NITA is the new public transportation governance body to be formed later this year. It is working on fare integration across Metra, CTA, and Pace. Those plans may involve handheld scanners.
