Melton Line Upgrade Begins with Major Infrastructure Works

The Albanese & Allan Labor Governments signed off on the contract worth $650 million with John Holland, KBR, Metro Trains Melbourne, & V/Line to deliver this significant project, with early construction starting in the next month, marking the beginning of the Melton Corridor transformation.

The project will increase passenger capacity by 50% with the operation of the nine-car VLocity trains scheduled for 2027, one year early. Due to these upgrades, the western suburbs will enjoy faster, more reliable journey times to the city center.

Platforms will be extended by engineers at the Cobblebank, Rockbank, Caroline Springs, and Deer Park stations. The proposed stabling yard for the Cobblebank station will provide services for the morning trains, apart from improving the reliability of train services. The design was also intended to accommodate the Metro trains once the network is electrified.

Melton Line Upgrade Links to Wider Network Expansion

However, in relation to the line, other projects are transforming the local transport network. The Melton Level Crossings Removal project will remove four hazardous level crossings in the area with the construction of the Melton Station, which will service the Ballarat lines, scheduled to be completed in the coming year.

This is part of the integration with the Sunshine Superhub, with the project estimated to be valued at $4 billion, marking the first stage of the Melbourne Airport Rail project and the eventual electrification process.

The importance of the cooperation between the state government and the federal government was revealed in the words of the Federal Minister, Catherine King, who highlighted the importance of having “a resilient and efficient transport network.”

Also, the Victorian Minister, Gabrielle Williams, pointed out the needs of the community, stating that “families want faster, safer, and more reliable transport.” The importance of the plan was highlighted by the residents, who see the plan as “the breakthrough we’ve long awaited.”
