Tram Depot Showcases Innovation and Safety
The state-of-the-art tram depot, Melbourne, was unveiled by Alstom together with the first G Class tram from the Dandenong facility. The launch is the latest dawn of sustainable transport innovation.

In 2023, the Victorian Government awarded the John Holland-led alliance the contract to construct the depot, combining automated system for inspection, intelligent safety technology, and digital monitoring system for the real-time performance of trams.
Engineers employ an automated scan system to confirm tram safety and maintenance standards are achieved before returning to service. And since worker safety is always an issue, automated barriers inhibit tram movement when crews are working in close proximity.
Digital dashboards track fleet state, maintenance schedules, and ready state. The systems facilitate quick responses to problems, minimize downtime, and assure passengers stable service each day.
Tram Depot Strengthens Local Industry and Sustainability
Designed with energy efficiency, rainwater storage, and recyclable materials, the tram depot mitigates environmental effects for enhanced efficiency. It now accommodates 11 maintenance tracks and 40 tram space.
20 more vehicle capacity were planned for demand increase. The first G Class test tram reached Adelaide in September 2025, kicking off an extensive test program ahead of passenger service when it begins operating on routes 57, 59, and 82.
Each G Class tram is provided with a low-floor configuration, priority seating, hearing loops, and electronic passenger information systems. The above facilitate accessible mobility and increase the comfortability of the journey.
Locally manufactured with 65 per cent Australian content, the program sustains around 1,900 regional production, construction, and supply chain jobs. The Maidstone facility alone contains more than 40 full-time Alstom experts, that further underpins Victoria’s position at the heart of international rail innovation.
