Major Infrastructure Advancements at the Melbourne Intermodal Terminal

The Intermodal Terminal Company has unveiled time-lapse footage of four towering gantry cranes being installed at the Melbourne Intermodal Terminal (MIT) in Somerton. These cranes, each 25 meters tall and weighing 350 tonnes, are supplied by Konecranes.

They will initially serve the 15-hectare Inner Terminal, enabling MIT to process up to one million shipping containers annually. Three more cranes will follow in the Outer Terminal, with future plans allowing for a total of 12 cranes.

MIT CEO Mishkel Maharaj explained that the fully electric cranes can regenerate electricity back into the grid during operations. This technology supports both environmental goals and operational efficiency over the long term.

Strategic Role of the Melbourne Intermodal Terminal in Supply Chains

The MIT’s infrastructure and capacity will meet Victoria’s interstate rail freight demand until at least the late 2050s. It will connect seamlessly to the future Inland Rail, creating a more resilient national freight network.

The terminal will also offer customs-bonded storage, an empty container park, and facilities for washing, fumigating, and repairing containers. These services will help streamline logistics and reduce last-mile trucking congestion.

Located near 20% of Victoria’s freight volumes and over three million square meters of warehousing, MIT benefits from immediate access to major logistics hubs. The completion of the North East Link will further enhance freight flows from the southeast.
