Suburban Rail Loop East Begins Full-Scale Construction

Two tunnel boring machines will proceed towards Glen Waverley, while the other two will head towards Box Hill. As a result of this development, construction teams have started working to build the required infrastructure for the tunnels and Burwood Station.

The proposed Burwood Station SRL will connect Deakin University directly to the rail network in Melbourne. This will greatly benefit students and staff at the Deakin University campus because the link will improve access to tram and bust routes.

Suburban Rail Loop East Boosts Jobs and Mobility

This megaproject has the potential to generate 8,000 job opportunities in the state of Victoria. In fact, more than 3,000 people are already employed. This project is very beneficial to the economy of Melbourne.

Mentioning the role of the new project “to transform the way people get around the city of Melbourne,” Marco Assorati, the Senior Executive Vice President of Webuild in the Oceania area, underlined the fact that “this reflects our dedication to sustainable mobility solutions.”

The contract includes approximately 10 km of dual tunnels from Box Hill to Glen Waverley, 39 crossings, two underground station boxes, two TBM launch sites, and a ventilation shaft. Webuild has a 33.5% interest in the joint venture.

Webuild has a history in Melbourne tracing back to the 1980s when the company’s forerunner contributed to the construction of the Melbourne Underground Rail Loop. The company has been continuing its tunneling experiences in Australia and internationally through the SRL East and North East Link projects.
