Mackay Sugar has announced the purchase of diesel-battery hybrid locomotives from Clayton Equipment. These advanced trains will enhance efficiency, reduce emissions, and modernize the company’s extensive rail network. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The company operates an extensive 610 mm gauge railway throughout Queensland’s sugar-growing regions. Their fleet of 34 locomotives and 6,600 wagons moves six million tonnes of cane annually.

Clayton Equipment’s CBD40 hybrid locomotives provide power comparable to larger models while reducing emissions and costs. Their battery system can charge using the engine or a direct mains connection.
These locomotives feature regenerative braking, which minimizes component wear and increases overall efficiency. Mackay Sugar can select a preferred engine, and each unit includes two 400 kW traction motors.

Brake vans, positioned at the train’s rear, receive commands remotely through a radio system. The latest model expands communication capabilities to distances exceeding 1.7 km.
Clayton Equipment Chairman Steve Gretton emphasized their commitment to sustainability and efficiency. He stated that these locomotives align with Mackay Sugar’s long-term investment strategy.
