Egle Šimė, CEO of LTG Cargo, emphasized the benefits of electric locomotives compared to diesel models. They reduce carbon emissions and provide customers with cost-efficient and sustainable freight options.
Electric locomotives operate based on freight weight, consuming energy more efficiently than diesel alternatives. They also eliminate refueling needs, reducing downtime and improving overall service reliability.
Benefits of LTG Cargo Electric Locomotives
Electric locomotives draw power directly from the contact network, ensuring zero direct carbon emissions. LTG Cargo is implementing energy regeneration technology to enhance operational efficiency.
Audrius Pukas, LTG Cargo’s Technology Manager, highlighted that braking energy will be regenerated back into the grid. This innovation minimizes operational costs while improving the system’s sustainability.
The newly acquired locomotives can haul trains weighing up to 5,700 tons, outperforming diesel locomotives. The first deliveries of these powerful machines are scheduled for early 2027.
The Future of Sustainable Freight with LTG Cargo
The Vilnius–Klaipėda route electrification project will be completed by late 2025. It will cut annual CO₂ emissions by 150,000 tons and electrify 28% of Lithuania’s rail network.
The Vilnius–Klaipėda corridor handles 50% of Lithuania’s rail freight, making it vital for sustainable logistics. This project strengthens LTG Cargo’s role as a leader in green transport innovation.
LTG Cargo remains committed to investing in eco-friendly technologies, delivering efficient and sustainable freight transportation services to its customers.
