LTG Cargo has deployed drones at key stations to accelerate railcar inspections, allowing twice as fast preparation of rolling stock for cargo transportation. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
LTG Cargo Applies New Technology for Railcar Inspections
Lithuanian freight operator LTG Cargo is optimizing inspection processes using drones, cutting the time required for technical checks in half.

This innovation boosts the quality of rolling stock preparation. As a result, clients benefit from faster and more reliable freight handling.
LTG Cargo’s CEO Egle Sime explained that the company currently focuses on inspecting open wagons used for transporting bulk materials like gravel.
The drones were purchased from the U.S. and are now active at stations in Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda, and Radviliškis. The Radviliškis freight depot sees the most intensive use.
LTG Cargo Makes Rolling Stock Inspections Safer
Company staff have completed drone operation training. Around 30 employees are now certified drone operators and use the equipment daily.
Thanks to this approach, technicians no longer need to manually climb onto railcars, significantly reducing safety risks. High-resolution cameras make the inspections more precise.
Beyond saving time, the drones also help detect hidden damages. They allow technicians to spot issues that could be missed in standard ground-level checks.
In the future, LTG Cargo plans to expand this technology to other types of railcars. This will open further opportunities for automating inspections and enhancing transport reliability.
