Marius Skuodis, the Minister of Transport and Communications of Lithuania, visited Juodšiliai in the Vilnius district, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Together with representatives from the LTG group and LTG Infra, he inspected Lithuania’s first noise barrier that also generates electricity.

During the visit, the results and prospects of this unique pilot project were discussed.

The solar-paneled noise barrier was installed this year in Juodšiliai, near the Kairškes-Vaičiūnai railway line.

The 22.2 kW station will provide up to 14 MWh of electricity per year. This solution not only helps to reduce noise from railway transport but also produces energy in a sustainable manner.

“All companies under the Ministry of Transport and Communications must adopt innovations and create demand for new technologies. Solar power plants on noise barriers are a unique product that demonstrates how to effectively utilize space along railway tracks. A similar project is being implemented by Via Lietuva, which will install solar panels on barriers on the Grigiškės section of the Vilnius-Kaunas-Klaipeda road by the end of the year,” said Marius Skuodis.

Ramūnas Dokšas, Head of Strategy and Management at LTG Infra, noted that modern noise barriers fulfill their primary function of noise protection but do not add additional value.

The pilot project aims to test the effectiveness of the vertical two-sided solar module in real conditions and to explore its ability to reduce noise and generate electricity.

“If the project proves successful, such solar power stations could be installed on many barriers. This will allow LTG Group to enhance the sustainability of its operations through renewable energy sources and reduce electricity consumption from external suppliers,” added Ramūnas Dokšas.

Vidmantas Janulevičius, Chairman of the Board of SoliTek, emphasized that Lithuanian companies are capable of implementing innovative projects in collaboration with the public sector.

Although the final results of the project will be known in a year, the interim results already exceed expectations, confirming the effectiveness of the new technology.

Preliminary estimates suggest that such a small solar power plant could prevent the emission of 420 tons of CO2 and save more than 9,500 trees over its lifetime.
