Lithuania and Ukraine will jointly develop new logistics routes
05.04.2023
During the visit to Poland, the Ministries of Infrastructure and Transport of Lithuania and Ukraine signed a memorandum of cooperation in the field of transport and logistics. The document signed on Thursday confirmed the desire of the countries to jointly develop new railway and other types of transport and logistics routes between the seaports of Ukraine and the Baltic countries, and increase the volume of cargo transportation. Railway Supply magazine writes about this with reference to the Lithuanian Ministry of Transport.
In the signed memorandum of cooperation, it was decided to apply to the institutions of the European Union (EU) with joint efforts to expand the north-south transport corridor connecting the Baltic, Black and Aegean Seas towards the Polish-Lithuanian border. The goal is to include the connection of this corridor through the border crossing at the EU-Ukraine border at Yagodin and Dorohusk in the trans-European transport network TEN-T, as well as to provide the necessary funding for the Klaipeda-Kyiv joint line to increase capacity.

Both countries will seek to further increase the volume of freight traffic by rail between the Klaipeda seaport and Ukraine, reducing the existing infrastructure and legal barriers. Joint actions of the parties will ensure the release of Ukrainian transit cargoes going to the Klaipeda seaport from inspection at the checkpoint Western border of the EU-Ukraine.
It was also agreed that Ukraine, together with the Baltic States, will join the Lithuanian Railways initiative to create free railways, strengthening the independence of the region and the sustainability of railway systems.
