Paris Metro Line 13 will be fully automated in 2033. A €345Mcontract has been signed between RATP and Siemens Mobility for integration of advanced CBTC avoiding system for commuters which makes the system safer and more reliable.

The design foresees the construction of a new control and automation center and the delivery of 66 new MF 19 trains with automation systems by Siemens. These new trains are also to supplant the old MF 77 trains which will begin to retire starting from 2027.

Automatic operation on Line 13 of Paris Metro will enable reduced headways and flexibility to adjust capacity during passenger demand spikes. That means travel will be quicker and more reliable, even at rush hour.

Moreover, energy consumption will be lowered and the operational reliability will be increased. The project is situated in Siemens’ Digital Expertise Center in Châtillon, where more than 500 engineers are dedicated to the latest railway technologies.

Next Phase of Automation for the Paris Metro

Line 13 is the fourth line in the Paris Metro system to receive automation. Line 14 was the first to have driverless operation introduced in 1998, followed by Line 1 in 2013, and Line 4 in January 2022.

The long-term maintenance is also secured in the contract for as long as 30 years, in order to guarantee that the metro system will operate smoothly over time and be gradually updated with new technologies.
