The initiative involves both American and Peruvian firms, led by Railroad Development Corp, which oversees the Ferrocarril Central Andino concession. Announced on November 16 at Monserrate station, the project highlights the U.S. commitment to Lima’s infrastructure.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken noted the U.S. contribution of railcars, engineering expertise, and supplies. Over 50% of the materials, including tracks and signaling systems, come from American companies.
Long-Term Vision for Commuter Rail in Lima
The rail service aims to accommodate 200,000 passengers daily, easing traffic and cutting commuting times. It offers faster, more efficient transit options for residents and visitors.
Mayor Rafael López Aliaga envisions replacing diesel trains with electric ones to boost sustainability. This project marks a key step toward modernizing Lima’s transportation systems and meeting international standards.
By launching this commuter rail service, Lima tackles congestion and improves urban mobility, setting a precedent for future developments.
