Level Crossing Removal in Melbourne Gains Momentum with Major Rail Works
08.07.2025
Level crossing removal in Melbourne has entered a critical phase as construction intensifies across the city’s south-east. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Crews are advancing on the elimination of three level crossings, construction of elevated rail bridges, and development of a new Mordialloc Station.
Level Crossing Removal Melbourne: Early Works Progress in Aspendale
In Aspendale, teams are actively working between Attenborough Road and James Avenue. They are relocating utilities, laying drainage, and conducting heavy earthworks. A temporary two-way road on Station Street will soon link the level crossing with Attenborough Road, allowing sewer realignment and clearing the path for major structural works.

Drilling is a key component of this phase. A total of 839 foundation piles will be installed. These will support 20 concrete piers in Mordialloc and six in Aspendale. Each pier requires six piles, drilled as deep as 30 meters into the ground.
To complete the work, engineers are using a 150-tonne Geotech E25 piling rig that delivers 50 tonnes of torque per meter. This powerful force ensures efficient drilling and prevents the equipment from getting stuck. According to a Victorian Government spokesperson, the 1200mm-wide auger delivers both precision and stability in these challenging ground conditions.
Level Crossing Removal Melbourne to Deliver Safety and Connectivity by 2029
Every pile is filled with approximately 36 cubic meters of high-strength concrete. Up to seven trucks deliver each load, and once poured, a crane lowers a reinforced steel cage into the concrete to complete the foundation. A skilled seven-person crew typically completes two to three piles per day.
This level crossing removal Melbourne initiative will move into full-scale construction soon. The three targeted crossings will be gone, and the modern Mordialloc Station will open in 2026.
The government has committed to making the entire Frankston Line level-crossing-free by 2029—a milestone that promises improved traffic flow and enhanced public safety across the region.
