The Chairman of the Board of the State Joint Stock Company Latvijas dzelzceļš (“Latvian Railways”), Rinalds Plavnieks, announced that the company is considering the potential opportunity to participate in the restoration of the Ukrainian railway infrastructure, including rolling stock, as reported by the railway journal Railway Supply, citing LDz.

The U.S. Ambassador to Latvia, Christopher Robinson, visited Latvijas dzelzceļš, and during the meeting with Chairman of the Board Rinalds Plavnieks and Board Member Vito Balode-Andrusa, the impact of international sanctions on the transportation sector, the development of Latvijas dzelzceļš, current projects, as well as the role of railways in national security and defense were discussed.

“During the conversation with the U.S. Ambassador to Latvia, we touched upon a wide range of issues, including the importance of railway infrastructure in ensuring national security in emergency situations, as well as the participation of Latvijas dzelzceļš in the military mobility of the EU and NATO. We also discussed the need to restore the Ukrainian railway infrastructure, including rolling stock, and the possibility of Latvijas dzelzceļš participating in this ambitious process,” noted Rinalds Plavnieks.

The meeting also addressed the position of Latvijas dzelzceļš in international freight transport corridors.

Latvijas dzelzceļš (LDz) is a state joint stock company that manages the railway infrastructure in Latvia. The company is involved in the operation, maintenance, and development of railway networks, providing passenger and freight transportation within the country.
