Krakow Updates Its Tram Fleet: New Tender for 90 Low-Floor Trams
07.08.2024
The operator of Krakow’s tram system, MPK SA Krakow, has announced a relaunch of the tender for the supply of 90 new trams, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The tender plans to procure trams in three variations, ranging from 32 to 45 meters in length.
LTG Cargo will operate its own fleet of 6,000 wagons
The final number of trams and the contract value will be determined later, depending on the volume of external funding and the prices for rolling stock.
According to the tender conditions, the delivery should include 30 three-section trams, 32-34 meters long, for single-sided operation, 30 four-section trams, 42-45 meters long, and an additional 30 three-section trams, 32-34 meters long, with the capability for bi-directional operation.
Most of the new trams should be fully low-floor.
The remaining trams should have a floor height of between 220 and 590 mm from the edge of the step. The tram design should allow them to navigate flooded track sections with water levels ranging from 2.5 to 8.5 cm at speeds from 40 to 5 km/h, respectively.
The operational temperature range for the trams is set from -30°C to +40°C. The maximum lifespan of the trams is 30 years with an average annual mileage of no more than 80,000 km.
The initial tender for 90 trams was announced in December last year and has been relaunched several times.
In July, the tender, with an initial value of €316.5 million, received bids from two companies: Turkish Bozankaya and Swiss Stadler.
Both bids exceeded the starting price. Stadler offered €333.3 million for 60 three-section trams, while Bozankaya requested €211.5 million for 60 three-section trams and €139.8 million for the supply of four-section trams.
According to MPK SA Krakow, the final number of trams will depend on the level of external funding and the prices received in the new tender.
The company has applied for funding under the EU Program “European Funds for Infrastructure, Climate, Environment 2021-2027” (FenIKS) and the Polish National Recovery and Resilience Plan.
