These trains will charge their batteries while moving under the contact network system. Thus, energy will extend routes to stations in the Bronx and Manhattan.

New technology addresses the issue of incompatible electrification on this line’s section. Because batteries will power trains where the network doesn’t support them.

Innovations for the New Haven Line

Siemens Mobility will supply 13 modern Charger family locomotives for the line. And the MTA board will soon approve the purchase contract.

In fall 2024, Siemens Mobility delivered two initial SC42-DM locomotives to MTA. They run on diesel and contact rails, linking New York to Connecticut.

But new battery-electric machines will enhance suburban transport options in the region. They also ensure steady operation on tricky sections without extra infrastructure.

Benefits of New Haven for Passengers

Trains with combined propulsion already proved effective on Metro-North Railroad lines. So, state authorities actively introduce innovations to upgrade transport networks.

Launching such locomotives marks a key step in modernizing New York’s commuter services. And residents will enjoy more convenient routes to Penn Station in Manhattan.

New York’s Transport Authority keeps advancing eco-friendly and high-tech solutions for passengers. Thus, new trains will boost comfort and reduce environmental strain.
