The Mireo Plus B contact-battery trains from Siemens Mobility have been introduced into service in Germany, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

This significant development in eco-friendly transportation marks a new era in the German railway system.

A fleet of 4 two-car trains is now operating on several routes in the federal state of Baden-Württemberg, with an additional 27 trains on order promising to enhance regional mobility.

The Mireo Plus B boasts impressive technical specifications: a range of up to 120 km, a maximum speed of 140 km/h, and seating for 120 passengers in each car.

The batteries, with a 15-year lifespan, are housed in two containers beneath the carriages, ensuring reliable and long-term power supply.

According to the manufacturer, operating costs are 25% lower than diesel trains, resulting in a reduction of diesel consumption by 1.8 million liters per year for a fleet of 27 trains.

It’s worth noting that at the end of March, two transport authorities from Lower Saxony – RGB and LNVG – received significant government funding to purchase 70 contact-battery trains, underscoring the growing interest in environmentally sustainable public transportation solutions.

These initiatives not only contribute to emissions reduction and improved air quality but also reaffirm Germany’s role as a leader in the development of green transportation infrastructure.
