Knorr-Bremse advances intelligent rail technologies

Knorr-Bremse introduced a new generation of smart solutions at the interface between digitalization and energy efficiency. The LEADER Flow system is based on the successful LEADER platform, which since 2018 has been employed in DB Cargo locomotives. Over 650 locomotives are equipped with it nowadays, and the system thus owes its high efficiency and fault tolerance back.

Engineers restructured the system’s architecture in order to process the data in real-time. The software accumulates the data from electronic timetables, GPS location, and onboard sensors. It gives back-driving suggestions based on the information in order to operate at the best speed and avoid excessive acceleration and braking.

LEADER Flow can also be incorporated into a locomotive’s control console or run from a tablet and so becomes a very flexible operator’s tool. Knorr-Bremse currently provides the system for freight operations but is in the process of developing a version for passenger operations, which will give its market potential further enhancement.

Knorr-Bremse strengthens its position in digital locomotive solutions

Following six-month trials with DB Cargo locomotives, the system achieved an average energy reduction of 10.2% with maximums up to 30%. The findings reinforce the technology’s capabilities for lowering operational expense and enhancing green behavior throughout the industry.

Knorr-Bremse views LEADER Flow as part of the future ecosystem for a “smart train control.” With the integration with other digital services, the company believes it can harness a platform with the potential for real-time route optimization and predictive maintenance.

Experts in the industry report that such systems shall be key in reducing carbon emissions and making the transport by rail in Europe more competitive. Knorr-Bremcom, therefore, keeps innovating in technologies with green mobility and sustainable transport aims.

News on railway transport, industry, and railway technologies from Railway Supply that you might have missed:

What is Knorr-Bremse LEADER Flow?

It is an intelligent driver assistance system developed by Knorr-Bremse to analyze train movement, energy use, and schedules in real time.

How does LEADER Flow work?

The system collects route, speed, and timetable data, then provides recommendations that help save energy and maintain schedule accuracy.

Can LEADER Flow be used on passenger trains?

Yes, Knorr-Bremse is already preparing an adapted version for passenger locomotives to broaden its application scope.
