KiwiRail Reassures Passengers of Safe Travel After Dust Reports
27.07.2025
KiwiRail has reassured passengers and staff that trains through the Remutaka Tunnel remain safe after reports of visible dust in carriages raised health concerns recently. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
Independent experts tested air quality last week and found extremely low levels of respirable dust, including silica. According to David Gordon, the dust likely came from tunnel maintenance carried out earlier this year.

KiwiRail confirmed there is no current health risk, but additional monitoring will start next week for better data. Gordon added that silica has always existed in ballast and was disturbed during summer upgrades.
KiwiRail to Expand Dust Monitoring Measures
The operator commissioned the report proactively and plans to review its dust management procedures. Experts advised using personal monitoring devices for staff, gathering data across multiple train sections and times to ensure comprehensive safety checks.

Metlink is increasing cleaning schedules for Wairarapa Line trains and checking seals on all doors and windows. Samantha Gain said passengers might notice staff wearing monitoring gear but should remain confident in service safety.
KiwiRail, Metlink, and Unions Prioritize Safety
KiwiRail, Transdev, and Metlink are collaborating with the Rail and Maritime Transport Union to assess long-term solutions. They will also share test results to maintain transparency and passenger trust.
Union spokesperson Karen Fletcher stressed the need to eliminate the dust source. She added that maintenance and cleaning crews, along with tunnel workers, must wear respiratory protection until the issue is resolved.
These combined measures aim to maintain safe, reliable train services and restore full passenger confidence in the Wairarapa Line.
