KiwiRail Modernizes Freight with New DM Locomotives
24.10.2025
KiwiRail has reached a new milestone with its first two DM locomotives entering service after extensive testing, marking the start of a major modernization program for New Zealand’s rail network.
This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Manufactured in Spain by Stadler, these new-generation locomotives presently travel between Timaru and Christchurch, offering better and environmentally friendlier freight transportation. It ordered 66 DM-class locomotives to replace the old DX fleet, which is expensive to uphold.

Each of the locomotives has 3,000 kilowatt diesel engines and the European Union Stage V emission level. Therefore, KiwiRail anticipates lowering nitrous oxide emissions by 25 percent and reducing particulate matter by 30 percent.
KiwiRail Enhances Operations and Energy Efficiency
Engineers worked for more than 5,000 kilometers of trials, verifying the locomotives’ credibility even on the demanding Otira–Arthur’s Pass section. David Gordon, Chief Metro and Capital Programme Officer, noted the new fleet ran “fault-free,” verifying its resilience under South Island conditions.
Stadler and KiwiRail staff co-operation was extremely productive. Due to time zone difference between Spain and New Zealand, round-the-clock work was undertaken by the engineers, whom overnight rolled out the repairs and upgrading. Outcome comprised of the improvements of the traction and the cooling system, vigilance software upgraded and cab ergonomics refined.

All locomotives have a Driver Energy Reduction and Advisory System, an Auto Engine Start-Stop, and Remotely Scheduled Maintenance through their Remote Diagnostic System to track energy consumption and the requirement for maintenance. These technologies enhance reliability and minimize long-haul fuel expenses.
Sustainability and Future Deliveries
KiwiRail intends phased distributions beginning January 2026, 47 locomotives to be sent to the South Island. Chief Executive Peter Reidy noted the new machines would improve the reliability of the freight and support the emission reduction targets of the nation.
He noted that updated, standardized fleets of locomotives enable long-term growth of the nation’s freight and make rail an integral of the country’s sustainable transportation policy. Since the DMs are much more efficient and powerful, they have the ability to run hotter trains with fewer units, reducing fuel consumption and operating expenses.
