China increases railway freight volumes in early 2025

China is actively increasing its railway freight volume, reaching 970 million tons in the first quarter of 2025, reflecting growth in both domestic and international logistics. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Freight volume growth: China strengthens its position

The country’s railways transported 3.1% more goods compared to the same period last year. Daily average loading reached 179,000 wagons, up 4.2% from Q1 2024.

This growth resulted from enhanced coordination between regions and strengthened logistics operations. China continues to show stable demand for transporting industrial and agricultural goods.

Cross-border routes: China expands logistics network

Special focus is placed on international routes. The China–Laos railway carried 1.51 million tons of cargo in the first three months, a 10% increase year-over-year.

This increase is linked to expanded foreign trade and steady demand from Southeast Asia. The rising interest in this route is driving infrastructure upgrades at border sections.

From January to March 2025, investments in railway projects reached approximately $18.2 billion, up 5.2% compared to Q1 2024.

Additional funding is allocated to building new mainlines and implementing digital transport systems. These initiatives reinforce China’s strategic role in global logistics.

Experts note that large-scale railway modernization ensures the country’s leadership in freight transportation across the Eurasian region.
