Kazipet Railway Manufacturing Unit reached a major milestone on February 21, 2026, when Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) completed a successful trial run that connected the facility to the national rail network, as reported by Rail Analysis.

The integration signals the unit’s shift from the construction phase to operational readiness, ahead of commissioning planned for March 2026. Built on 160 acres, the hub is intended to boost Indian Railways’ rolling stock production capacity.

Meanwhile, during the trial, a diesel locomotive with a coach moved from Kazipet Yard into the RMU premises via a newly constructed railway connectivity track, according to an RVNL LinkedIn post. At the same time, that run formally tied the manufacturing complex into Indian Railways’ operational system and confirmed the link is ready for the next stage.

Strategic location on South Central Railway strengthens connectivity

The Kazipet RMU sits at Kazipet, a key junction under South Central Railway on the Balharshah–Secunderabad trunk route, which forms part of the larger Delhi–Chennai corridor. Also, from there, the facility supports seamless north–south and east–west connectivity and helps reduce logistical dependency on road transport.

In addition, the location is designed to speed up dispatch of newly manufactured coaches and rolling stock, provide direct rail connectivity to major freight and passenger corridors, and improve the inward movement of raw materials. Still, by integrating with the main railway network, the facility is positioned to strengthen supply chain efficiency nationwide.

160-acre manufacturing hub and core rolling stock production facilities

Developed as a modern industrial manufacturing hub, the 160-acre site includes the civil and industrial infrastructure delivered by RVNL as the Project Implementation Agency. The Main Shop measures 300 meters × 110 meters and features four dedicated manufacturing bays equipped with heavy-duty gantry cranes.

Separately, specialized units include an automated robotic paint shop, a shower test facility for leak testing, and a fully equipped test shop for pre-dispatch inspections. The broader setup includes an integrated store yard for material management, administrative and utility buildings, staff canteen and parking facilities, a power sub-station, internal roads and a drainage network, security and surveillance systems, and complete boundary infrastructure. The heavy industrial workshop sheds were built using advanced Pre-Engineered Building (PEB) technology, described as supporting faster construction timelines, optimal daylight utilization, lower maintenance requirements, and reduced energy consumption.

Internal rail track network, yard integration, and commissioning timeline

A defining feature of the site is a 13.15 km internal railway track network, made up of 8.81 km of ballasted track and 4.34 km of ballastless track, as noted by Hindustan Times. For example, ballastless track has been deployed mainly within workshop areas and industrial bays to support stability, precise alignment, and minimal maintenance under heavy operational loads.

In addition, RVNL constructed a dedicated railway link line connecting the RMU to Kazipet Yard, completed yard integration works, and delivered turnouts and signaling integration with the main railway system. This setup allows raw materials to arrive and finished coaches to be dispatched directly via rail.

Machinery and Plant (M&P) installations in the Main Shop, Paint Shop, and Test Shop have been completed and are scheduled for commissioning by March 2026. Meanwhile, the successful trial run is presented as confirming that the connectivity, signaling, and integration systems are functional before formal commissioning.

Shri Saleem Ahmad, Chairman & Managing Director, RVNL, said: “The successful trial run and integration of the Railway Manufacturing Unit at Kazipet with the main railway network marks a defining milestone in the execution of this project and will strengthen India’s railway manufacturing infrastructure. RVNL has executed the project with strong commitment to quality, safety, speed and timelines. The RMU will significantly enhance domestic manufacturing capacity, improve logistics efficiency, and support Indian Railways’ long-term modernization and expansion plans.”

Green-rated features and expected regional benefits

The Kazipet RMU is described as a green-rated industrial facility with sustainability measures including a 2 MWp rooftop solar plant with grid export capability, four rainwater harvesting ponds with 20 lakh litres capacity each, energy-efficient LED lighting systems, and a modern sewage treatment plant. Also, the use of PEB structures is also presented as supporting energy efficiency.

At the same time, the unit is expected to strengthen domestic rolling stock manufacturing capacity and reduce logistical pressure on existing production units of Indian Railways. Separately, the project is also linked to direct and indirect employment generation in Telangana and to wider regional industrial development, alongside improved logistics efficiency nationwide.

Still, as a Navratna Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Railways, RVNL is presented as continuing to play a critical role in accelerating major railway infrastructure projects across India. In addition, with core infrastructure completed, internal tracks laid, connectivity established, and machinery installations finalized, the Kazipet Railway Manufacturing Unit is described as ready to begin operations as part of India’s broader railway modernization journey.
