President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev visited the facility on January 6 to evaluate production operations. During his tour, officials briefed him about the plant’s capabilities and recent export achievements, Caliber.Az reported.
The plant, developed with France’s Alstom, manufactures locomotive bodies, transformers, and electrical cabinets. Kazakhstan’s industrialization initiatives and partnerships support advanced production processes and export opportunities.
Officials reported that the facility produced 380 freight and 70 passenger locomotives for local use. Additionally, Kazakhstan exported 80 locomotive sections to Azerbaijan to enhance cross-border railway connectivity.
Kazakhstan’s Collaboration with Alstom Drives Economic and Industrial Development
Kazakhstan’s partnership with Alstom highlights long-term industrial strategies, fostering economic growth and job creation. Alstom is building service centers in Astana, Almaty, Shu, and Arys, generating 700 new positions.
Since 2010, Alstom has played a vital role in Kazakhstan’s railway sector. Its EKZ plant, established in 2012, specializes in producing electric locomotives for Kazakhstan and regional markets, including Azerbaijan.
By 2014, EKZ secured contracts to deliver 40 Prima T8 “AZ8A” freight locomotives to Azerbaijan. This agreement boosted Kazakhstan’s export profile and supported Azerbaijan’s railway modernization efforts.
Alstom became the sole owner of the EKZ facility in March 2022, strengthening its regional operations. The company’s investment strategy aligns with Kazakhstan’s goals for economic diversification and technological development.
Kazakhstan’s efforts to expand exports demonstrate its growing industrial capabilities and strategic partnerships. The recent shipment of freight locomotives to Azerbaijan reinforces Kazakhstan’s role as a regional manufacturing leader.
Future investments in infrastructure, service centers, and workforce development are expected to sustain economic growth. Kazakhstan’s focus on innovation ensures it remains competitive in global transportation and logistics markets.
