Kanpur Metro operational readiness is advancing. The project has energised the 750V DC third rail on the downline of Corridor-1. That section runs between Kanpur Central and Naubasta. Trial runs continue on the upline up to Naubasta. Similar testing on the downline is now being prepared.

Kanpur Metro operational readiness on Corridor-1

The Kanpur Metro Rail Project has completed the installation and energisation of the 750V DC third rail on the downline stretch of Corridor-1. That stretch runs between Kanpur Central and Naubasta. This completion was reported by Rail Analysis. The work makes power supply available for metro train movement on that section. It also supports the next phase of system testing and validation.

At the same time, trial runs are already under way on the upline up to Naubasta. The downline is now being prepared for the same process. Track work is complete. The corridor has moved into the next stage of trials and system integration.

In addition, Corridor-1 track work is complete across the full route from IIT Kanpur to Naubasta. The downline tunnel section between Kanpur Central and Swadeshi Cotton Mill Ramp has also been finished. This clears the way for metro operations across the stretch.

Also, recent progress includes downline electrification and ongoing upline trial runs to Naubasta. It also includes full track readiness on Corridor-1 and completed downline tunnel construction. Together, these steps show that infrastructure and systems are aligning for full-scale operations in the near future.

Corridor-2 tunnelling completion and network details

Separately, work has also been completed on the 4.80 km underground section under Corridor-2. That section runs between Rawatpur and Double Pulia. Metro Rail News reports that the final tunnel breakthrough was achieved by Tunnel Boring Machine Parvati. This completed tunnelling for both corridors. The tunnelling work was completed in 16 months from the initial drive.

Kanpur Metro is a flagship urban transport project aimed at transforming mobility in the city. According to the official project overview, the total network length is 32.4 km. Corridor-1 runs from IIT Kanpur to Naubasta over 23.8 km. Corridor-2 extends from Agriculture University to Barra-8 over 8.6 km. The system includes both elevated and underground stations.

The priority corridor from IIT Kanpur to Motijheel was inaugurated in December 2021. It was completed in just over two years. This set a national benchmark.

UPMRCL role in metro expansion

The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (UPMRCL) is a joint venture of the Government of India and the Government of Uttar Pradesh. It is spearheading metro projects across Lucknow, Kanpur, and Agra. Kanpur Metro was also the first in Uttar Pradesh to introduce the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC). This allows travel across multiple transport systems and services nationwide.

Meanwhile, the Kanpur Metro project is moving closer to full operational capability. That position reflects third rail energisation, complete track work, and finished tunnelling. These latest milestones also reinforce Uttar Pradesh’s vision of becoming a ‘Metro Pradesh’ with efficient, sustainable, and world-class public transport systems.
