Upgrading of Kananook Increases Capacity and Modernization

The upgraded Kananook centre can fit 21 trains, from eight previously, and assists Metro Trains Melbourne with larger fleets. Engineers incorporated a new train wash, maintenance centre, and worker facilities.

Since this enhancement raises flexibility, trains can exit and enter with ease. Thus, Frankston Line enjoys reduced scheduling troughs and reduced turnaround time within heavy travel hours.

This upgrade accompanied previous works undertaken in 2020 within the Carrum level crossing removal project. In 2022, a new control centre and up-to-date driver facilities enhanced overall reliability and safe working.

Kananook Upgrade Prepares for X’Trapolis 2.0 Trains

The new X’Trapolis 2.0 fleet was tested at Kananook as part of an important move towards modernizing Victoria’s train network. Energy-efficient technologies and improved passenger ride and lower emissions were provided by these trains.

In a recent test, a unit ran on the upgraded track and overhual wiring after going through the new automatic wash facility. The test proved both system reliability and full deployment readiness.

By centralising stabling at the beginning of the Frankston Line, Metro Trains will be able to maximise fleet distribution, increase frequency of service, and minimise operational delays. The line will be fully level crossing free by 2029.
