The Italy-Sweden freight route has been launched as a new 2,500 km rail service. It links the two countries. FS Logistix launched it through TX Logistik, together with Nurminen Logistics.

Italy-Sweden freight route and service model
The weekly service connects Castelguelfo, in the province of Parma, with Frövi in central Sweden’s Örebro region, as reported by Railway Pro. Also, it passes through five European countries. In addition, it operates as a dedicated block train system for Nurminen Logistics. Meanwhile, the connection is enabled by cooperation between FS Logistix, Mercitalia Rail and TX Logistik. At the same time, it offers a fast transit time between Italy and Sweden.
In regular operation, the train is more than 500 metres long. For example, it mainly carries containers loaded with food, beverages, tiles, pulp, wood, paper and steel. It also carries other goods.

“A transit time of around two to three days offers a fast and substantially lower-emission alternative to long-distance road transport between Italy and Sweden. By combining a dedicated block train with the flexibility to handle partial shipments, we can offer reliable, efficient and low-emission transport to an even wider customer base, including in the retail industry,” says Olli Pohjanvirta, CEO of Nurminen Logistics.
The 2,500-kilometre connection between Castelguelfo and Frövi is the longest continuous corridor in TX Logistik’s European network.
Castelguelfo to Frövi rail connection
With the new Italy-Sweden freight route, “we are strengthening trade relations between the two countries and at the same time sending a strong signal for international connectivity. The train demonstrates what is possible when the strengths of a corporate group come together: We are bringing Europe closer together through rail,” said Sabrina De Filippis, CEO of FS Logistix.
Still, Frövi has been an important Scandinavian railway hub since the 19th century. Separately, loading takes place in Sweden on Thursdays and in Castelguelfo on Mondays. On the northbound journey, the route runs from Castelguelfo via Chiasso, Basel, Hamburg, Padborg, the Öresund Bridge and Malmö to Frövi. Also, Nurminen Logistics notes that the service is built around a weekly connection between the two terminals.
Mercitalia Rail operates the service from Castelguelfo to Chiasso. Meanwhile, TX Logistik provides traction from Chiasso to Frövi using modern multi-system locomotives. In addition, the journey takes about two days through Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Denmark and Sweden.
