InnoTrans 2024: Battery-Powered Shunting Locomotives at the Exhibition
15.08.2024
In anticipation of InnoTrans 2024, we have the pleasure of speaking with Tsvetelin Kolev, the Director of Express Service OOD – a Bulgarian manufacturer of battery-powered and diesel shunting locomotives. We’ll explore what exciting developments and innovations Express Service OOD has prepared for the exhibition.
As one of the largest events in the railway industry approaches, Mr. Kolev will share insights about new products and developments, including the ES3000 and ES1000 battery-powered locomotives. He will discuss their benefits and significance for sustainable transport infrastructure.
We’ll also cover the company’s recent achievements, such as the delivery of the first battery-powered locomotive to the Bulgarian Ministry of Transport and Communications, plans for expanding production, and the importance of international cooperation. Join us to learn more about how Express Service OOD is driving innovation and setting future goals.
– Good day, Mr. Kolev! What new products and developments does Express Service OOD plan to showcase at InnoTrans 2024?
– Good day! At InnoTrans 2024, we are excited to present our range of battery-powered locomotives, including the ES3000 and ES1000 models. These locomotives are distinguished by their high environmental performance, low noise levels, and absence of harmful emissions. We are confident that our innovations will generate significant interest among the exhibition visitors.
– Your company recently delivered the first battery-powered locomotive to the Bulgarian Ministry of Transport and Communications. Can you tell us about this project and its significance?
– Yes, this is a significant milestone for us. In July 2024, we successfully delivered the first ES3000 series battery-powered locomotive to the Bulgarian Ministry of Transport and Communications. The locomotive was deployed at the Sofia locomotive depot. We conducted training for its operation and maintenance, as well as performance testing. The energy efficiency check showed excellent results: 12 kW/km at a 385-ton load, which translates to operational costs of around $1.67 per kilometer. These are impressive figures for shunting operations.
– Why did you choose to focus on battery-powered locomotives?
– Battery-powered locomotives represent the future of rail transport. They are not only more environmentally friendly but also cost-effective in operation. They help investors to optimize human power and cut maintenance expenses. Their use helps reduce carbon dioxide and other harmful emissions, which is particularly important in the context of global climate change. We see great potential in these technologies and aim to lead in their development and implementation.
– What advantages does the ES3000 model have compared to other locomotives?
– The ES3000 model offers several key advantages. Firstly, it significantly lowers operational costs due to its high energy efficiency. Secondly, it is an environmentally clean solution, producing no harmful emissions. This model is suitable for operation in restricted spaces and on non-electrified tracks. Additionally, it produces very high tractive effort, making it ideal for heavy shunting tasks.
– What are the technical and operational benefits of your battery-powered locomotives, particularly the ES3000 and ES1000 models?
– Our battery-powered locomotives have several benefits. As mentioned, they can operate in restricted spaces and on non-electrified tracks. The ES3000 model is designed for heavy shunting work and has high power, while the ES1000 model is perfect for light to medium shunting tasks. They also require lower maintenance costs compared to traditional diesel locomotives. With very few components requiring any care – maintenance costs are close to 0. Furthermore, they operate almost silently, making them ideal for urban environments and industrial sites.
– The shunting locomotive manufacturer is expanding production. Can you provide more details about the factory expansion?
– Yes, earlier this year we completed another expansion of our factory. We built new repair areas totaling 5000 m², laid over 300 meters of new internal railway tracks, and updated our facilities and warehouses. This expansion supports our commitment to “green” and energy-efficient construction, which is crucial for sustainable manufacturing. We are adapting our technologies and work organization to meet modern requirements and improve rail infrastructure.
– What meetings and negotiations are planned for InnoTrans 2024? Do you expect to sign new contracts?
– At InnoTrans 2024, we have scheduled several meetings with potential clients and partners from various countries, including Ukraine, especially since our range of battery-powered locomotives includes models for 1520 mm gauge. Our goals are to discuss cooperation opportunities, showcase our latest developments, and secure new contracts. We hope our participation in the exhibition will lead to several contracts for supplying battery-powered locomotives and other solutions we offer. We also plan to discuss new projects and collaborative opportunities with our partners for the future.
– What role does international cooperation play in the development of your company?
– International cooperation is crucial for our development. It allows us to exchange cutting-edge technologies and best practices, access new markets, and adapt our products to their requirements. We value the opportunity to participate in international projects and strive for long-term, mutually beneficial partnerships, especially since 90% of our products are exported. We are among the few EU rolling stock manufacturers who have adapted all their models to 1520mm gauge.
