Indian company Medha Servo Drives led the development, partnering with Canada’s Ballard Power Systems, which supplied 100 kW hydrogen fuel cells for the project.

The 10-car trainset features two powered cars and delivers 1,200 horsepower, accommodating over 2,600 passengers. The trials confirmed the technical readiness of the train for future operation, although commercial service has not yet begun.

Hydrogen Train and India’s Plans for Green Mobility

Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the first hydrogen train will launch in 2027 on the 89-kilometer Sonipat–Jind route in Haryana state.

India has allocated $340 million for the production of 35 hydrogen trains and another $73 million to build refueling infrastructure. Each train will cost around $9.2 million, while setting up each route is estimated at $8 million.

In October 2024, GreenH Electrolysis unveiled a proton exchange membrane electrolyzer capable of producing 430 kg of hydrogen per day. This unit is expected to support continuous fueling of the hydrogen fleet.

The government views hydrogen propulsion as a core part of India’s rail modernization strategy. With sustained investment, the country could become a leader in hydrogen mobility within the next decade.
