The program includes installing LiDARs on 1,000 trains and 1,500 kilometers of tracks within 18–24 months.

LiDAR systems will detect cracks, faults, and defects on railway tracks with high accuracy. This technology creates 3D models of tracks using sensors, reducing human error and minimizing accident risks.

Currently, three companies in India have the capability to produce such systems. Among them are NeoGeoInfo from Gurugram, Intraspatial from Bangalore, and Geokno from Hyderabad. These companies will provide the necessary equipment for enhanced rail safety.

The rise in incidents related to track damage has led to this decision to purchase LiDARs. In 2024, 24 similar incidents were reported, drawing attention to the urgent issue. India’s Minister of Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw, stated that implementing the project will improve railway safety.
