Indian Railways strengthens rail safety technologies

The national operator is currently implementing a very important modernization project in the West of India. Engineers have already upgraded 166 locomotives. The remaining three will follow suit very soon. This has ensured full adherence to the new national safety requirements pertaining to the Indian diesel and electrical locomotives.

The system tracks the activities of the driver in real-time. In the event that the operator is unresponsive for a period of over one minute, the system provides a visual warning signal. After failure to respond, the system self-activates the emergency brake. Through the enhancement of the system, the engineer has minimized the risk of accidents related to human errors.

Indian Railways adopts digital solutions and Kavach 4.0

The firm keeps investing in smart technologies. In the new system, instead of the pedal used to ensure alertness, the driver uses the control panel button. This innovation offers a more precise indication of alertness and makes the system easier to use.

In September, Indian Railways contracted Indian firm “Concord Control Systems” to develop and implement the “Kavach 4.0” automatic train protection system for the South Central Railway Zone. The system uses automatic braking in case the driver goes beyond the set speed limit or disregards the warning signals.

Furthermore, the Indian Railway Ministry has plans to develop an integrated command center for traffic management involving all the operating departments. This will ensure less congestion and faster response. This development clearly indicates the onset of the Indian Railways’ digital revolution.

According to industry observers, the continuous upgradation of equipment and analytics based on AI are paving the way for the creation of a “smart railway” network in the Indian context. These technological advancements increase the safety and efficiency of train transport.

What is the Indian Railways vigilance control system?

It is an intelligent monitoring module that tracks driver activity and automatically applies brakes if no response is detected within a preset time frame.

How does Kavach 4.0 work and why is it important?

The system prevents collisions and overspeeding by automatically braking when safety signals are ignored or speed limits are exceeded.

When will Indian Railways complete full modernization?

According to the company, the remaining locomotives will be upgraded in the coming months, completing the rollout of the new vigilance control system.
