Indian Railways Introduces AI Systems to Protect Wildlife in Elephant Corridors
21.12.2024
Indian Railways has implemented AI-powered systems to safeguard elephants from collisions along critical railway corridors. This innovation supports wildlife conservation while improving rail safety and disaster prevention measures. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Indian Railways Enhances Safety with AI Technology
Indian Railways recently partnered with RailTel Corporation to deploy an Intrusion Detection System (IDS). This AI-based monitoring tool prevents elephant collisions and addresses environmental concerns near railway tracks.

The IDS operates using fiber-optic sensors and AI software to detect wildlife movements up to 60 km. It provides real-time alerts to station masters, train drivers, and control centers, ensuring rapid response.
The system uses acoustic sensors based on optical fiber technology, detecting vibrations caused by animal movements. Alerts are generated 30–40 minutes in advance, enabling authorities to respond promptly and prevent accidents.
Indian Railways Implements Wildlife Protection Solutions
Indian Railways initially tested the IDS in Assam and West Bengal, achieving remarkable results. Based on its success, officials plan to expand the system across other elephant corridors under NFR’s jurisdiction.
Beyond preventing collisions, the IDS identifies rail fractures, landslides, and unauthorized digging, improving disaster response capabilities. It also helps secure project approvals for railway expansion in protected areas.
India is home to 27,312 elephants, with Assam hosting 5,719—the second-largest population nationwide. Protecting these animals has become essential due to increasing threats from rail accidents and habitat disruptions.
The IDS also addresses human-wildlife conflicts, reducing casualties among local communities. Officials reported 118 human deaths caused by elephant encounters in Assam over the past year, underscoring the need for effective monitoring.
Authorities emphasize that AI technologies balance wildlife protection and infrastructure growth. These systems support conservation efforts while maintaining efficient and safe railway operations.
Indian Railways continues to expand this initiative, promoting sustainable development without compromising ecological stability. Its AI-driven solutions ensure long-term safety for both animals and passengers.
