In Latvia, there are plans to convert 12 shunting locomotives TGМ4 to hydrogen

The agreement was signed by the Estonian company Hanko Trans (owner of the Latvian transport company DZ Loko) and the Spanish developer of cryogenic and gas chemical equipment, Coolergy, established in 2023, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
Coolergy is set to modernize and convert 12 TGМ4 locomotives to hydrogen propulsion, originally manufactured by the Lyudinovsky Locomotive Plant and currently in operation at the Riga seaport.

The first locomotive’s conversion is expected to be completed by September 2024.
The project aims to halve fuel costs, eliminate harmful emissions, and enhance the technical characteristics of the locomotives.
Coolergy notes that this modernization aligns with the port’s carbon neutrality program by 2030.
The upgraded locomotives are expected to have a power of 550 kW, utilizing hydrogen fuel cells, and a supplier for these fuel cells is currently being sought.
The agreement between Hanko Trans and Coolergy includes life cycle contracts, involving monthly maintenance fees for the locomotive and hydrogen supply.
Coolergy also plans to build a hydrogen production and liquefaction plant in one of the Baltic countries with a capacity of over 50 tons per year, relying on renewable energy sources for its operation.
The company is reportedly in talks with wind energy facility owners in Estonia and Latvia.
