02.06.2025
Hunter businesses are intensifying efforts to win the next major train manufacturing contract, as New South Wales prepares to modernize its fleet by early 2027 through the Future Fleet Program. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The initiative targets the replacement of the aging Tangara trains, aiming for 50% local content in the design, build, and upkeep of approximately 450 new carriages.

Transport for NSW has launched a market engagement campaign, collaborating with builders and suppliers to collect insights, evaluate readiness, and shape future train procurement strategies. The survey closes Friday, June 6.
Data from this process will help the NSW Government decide the direction of the program, with outcomes to be reviewed and shared with the industry by August.
Train Manufacturing Could Revive Regional Jobs
Premier Chris Minns has previously noted that Hunter businesses would be highly competitive under a Labor-led government. His party committed to replacing the Tangara fleet built in Broadmeadow.
That pledge could create up to 1,000 regional jobs. The new train contract is expected to generate sustained employment and revive regional industrial capability.
Camilla Drover, Deputy Secretary of Infrastructure Projects and Engineering at TfNSW, said NSW has a deep legacy in rail production. She emphasized that rebuilding skills and restoring confidence remain top priorities.
Train Fleet Designed to Support Local Industry
Sydney Trains CEO Matt Longland praised the Tangara fleet’s 35 years of service. He stated that the next generation must continue this legacy and support Australian manufacturing for decades to come.
Hunter companies are encouraged to register through the Transport for NSW Industry Portal and list their capabilities via the Industry Capability Network.
The Future Fleet Program not only promises a new train system—it aims to reestablish the state’s manufacturing strength and deliver lasting economic impact.
