12.11.2023
In a new agreement, Hitachi Rail has secured a contract worth 861 million euros with Trenitalia for the delivery of 30 new ETR1000 high-speed trains, with an option for an additional ten trains for an extra 287 million euros, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
Manufactured at Hitachi Rail’s Italian facilities in Naples and Pistoia, near Florence, the new fleet is set to commence deliveries in the spring of 2026, at a rate of 8-10 trains per year.

These trains, adorned with the iconic red livery of Frecciarossa 1000, will primarily serve Italy’s high-speed rail network. However, their versatility extends beyond borders, as they may operate on high-speed lines in France, Germany, Spain, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, and the Netherlands.
The fleet’s integrated technology enables seamless transitions across various national railway infrastructures, smoothly adapting to different power sources and signaling systems, facilitating extensive travel throughout Europe.
Since 2010, Hitachi Rail has produced 58 units of the ETR1000 for Trenitalia, Ferrovie dello Stato Group, with an additional six currently in development. With this latest order of 30 trains, the total number of ETR1000 units will reach 94, underscoring the immense popularity of these trains among passengers and operators alike.
Hitachi Rail takes pride in its record of equipping Italy with fast, safe, reliable, and sustainable trains, contributing to reduced travel times between key Italian cities.
The ETR1000, capable of reaching a maximum speed of 350 km/h in passenger mode, is renowned for its minimal environmental impact, setting standards for high-speed trains with its acceleration, quiet operation, and smooth ride.

The success of these trains extends internationally, with ETR1000 fleets operating in Spain for over a year and facilitating cross-border travel between Paris and Milan in France since 2021.
Key to the train’s success is its use of lightweight alloys for the train body, providing an exceptional power-to-weight ratio and impressive acceleration, crucial factors in the success of high-speed trains in Italy.
Moreover, the design is environmentally friendly, with the potential for nearly all materials to be recovered for reuse at the end of the train’s lifecycle.
The new trains, while retaining the core features of the legendary existing models, will feature an updated interior. Final design details are expected to be revealed before passenger service commences.

Setting high standards for comfort, the ETR1000 trains boast excellent sound insulation for quiet passenger journeys, adjustable LED lighting, ambient air conditioning, accessibility for passengers with limited mobility, onboard monitors, Wi-Fi, and power outlets for laptops and smartphones.
With a length of approximately 200 meters and a capacity of 460 passengers, the ETR1000 continues to redefine the travel experience on high-speed rail in Italy and beyond.
