Hitachi Rail to Implement ETCS on New Divača–Koper Line in Slovenia
18.09.2024
Hitachi Rail will implement an advanced European Train Control System (ETCS) on a new railway line in Slovenia, as reported by the railway news portal Railway Supply.

The project involves the modernization of the Divača–Koper route, which includes the construction of a second track 27 km in length, complementing the existing single-track route.

The main work, such as the installation of ETCS Level 1 and the modernization of the railway signaling and telemechanics systems (ŽAT), will be carried out by Hitachi Rail specialists in cooperation with GH Holding.
The project is commissioned by the state-owned company 2TDK, responsible for the development of the new infrastructure.
The Divača–Koper railway, stretching 50 km, plays a crucial role in Slovenia’s transport network, connecting the Port of Koper with Hungary and forming part of two major trans-European transport corridors.
The construction of a second track on this route will significantly increase the line’s capacity, enabling larger freight volumes to be transported by rail, which in turn will strengthen the position of the Port of Koper as a key transport hub.
Hitachi Rail already has experience working on this route. In 2015, the company equipped the single-track Divača–Koper line with the European ETCS Level 1 system, microprocessor interlocking systems (MPC), and centralized traffic control (CTC).
In addition, the ARAMIS Module D automated dispatch control system was installed. Since 2012, Hitachi Rail has been actively developing the railway technology market in Slovenia, installing ETCS on 300 km of tracks.
Moreover, the company supplies axle counters, signals, and point machines to the country.
