The agreement is valued at 1,361,000,000 NTD, or about 37 million EUR, as reported by Railway-News. The contract covers a full replacement of the current ATP system used on TRC’s 63 EMU500 trains. It also includes the installation of Hitachi Rail’s own ELO system.

EMU500 ATP system upgrade scope

The work continues an established relationship between Hitachi Rail and Taiwan Railways Corporation. In 2019, Hitachi Rail supplied TRC with 600 EMU train cars. The new contract extends that cooperation into the signalling sector of TRC’s rail infrastructure.

The new ATP solution is intended to modernise the electrical systems on the EMU500 vehicles. Also, the system is expected to reduce possible faults. In addition, it is expected to help extend vehicle life, improve operational efficiency, and support a future upgrade to ETCS Level 2 digital signalling.

Hitachi Rail and TRC partnership

Gabriel KOE, Senior Director, Hitachi Rail Taiwan, said:

This contract award underlines Hitachi Rail’s longstanding partnership with TRC which is expanding into the signalling sector of TRC’s rail infrastructure and we are committed to delivering a high quality and innovative solution to our client.
