Hanoi Metro Gains a New Transport Artery

The building process commenced on October 9, 2025, with the opening ceremony celebrating this milestone in the modernization process of the infrastructure in Hanoi. The project works towards extending mobility, ensuring less congestion, and facilitating the city’s shift towards greener transport modes.

The initial 11-kilometer portion will consist of ten stations — three elevated and seven subterranean. The tunnel will extend below Hoan Kiem Lake, which happens to be among Hanoi’s key attractions, and this necessitates high-end engineering and high-grade safety conditions.

The project is also financed from the Hanoi city budget and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The collaboration shows global confidence and reinforces the city’s capabilities in sustainable urban transport. Furthermore, a 11.3-hectare depot facility will be constructed in order to maintain and keep stock in store the rolling stock.

Hanoi Metro Becomes the Core of Vietnam’s Transport Strategy

The first section should be operational in 2029. Once complete, the line extends and reaches south and north with a spur line to the Noi Bai International Airport. In total, the entire line will measure 42 km with a total of 32 stations and become among the nation’s longest and most modern metro lines.

Hanoi currently manages two lines successfully. Line 2A in 2021 and Line 3 in 2024 were the successful additions. Both together transported a total of roughly 14.8 million people in the previous year — definitive evidence that the demand for public transport ever expands since citizens opt for swifter and greener modes of transport.

Then, the building of Line 5 will commence in December 2025. It will join the city center with western suburbs, completing one more milestone in the direction of having modern and efficient urban rail infrastructure meeting international criteria for comfort and environmental efficiency.
