Grizzly bears killed by train in Banff National Park
14.06.2025
Grizzly bears have died in Banff National Park after separate train accidents, which conservationists say is a serious threat to the future of the region’s grizzly bears. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Two females were fatally hit in different incidents, on May 27 and May 30, both reported by Canadian Pacific Kansas City. One of the victims was a breeding-age female.

Officials confirmed she had been seen near Bear 122, known as The Boss, before the accident. He survived and appears to understand the danger of trains due to his experience.
Parks Canada ecologist Saundi Stevens explained that grizzly bears reproduce slowly, making each female loss critical. The population cannot easily recover from such incidents.
Grizzly bears face increased railway danger
The second bear was a younger female spotted with another grizzly, possibly her sibling. Experts suspect they were unfamiliar with the risks around the train tracks.
Because younger animals often lack awareness of threats, they are more likely to be killed in collisions. This highlights the urgent need for new safety measures.
Grizzly bears at risk despite current protections
While Parks Canada has built fencing and implemented deterrents, those measures have not eliminated the danger. Train activity through the Bow Valley remains high.
Conservationists now call for expanded efforts in collaboration with rail operators to prevent further fatalities among grizzly bears and other wildlife in the area.
