The new facility will feature a hydrogen-ready direct reduced iron (DRI) plant, two electric arc furnaces, and rolling mills designed to manufacture structural steel and rebar. Italian supplier Danieli will provide all core equipment.

In October 2024, Greensteel signed an agreement with Danieli to deliver a rebar mill. Now, the deal includes a full suite of equipment, expected to arrive by late 2026 or early 2027. The final location is under review, but Whyalla remains the leading candidate.

Greensteel President and CEO Mena Ibrahim confirmed the company’s aggressive timeline, supported by an accelerated delivery schedule. Operations are set to begin within two years, generating over 1,500 permanent positions and 2,500 construction jobs.

Greensteel Expansion Strengthens Australia’s Steel Sector

This investment will close critical gaps in domestic manufacturing. The plant will produce extra-long steel sections needed for high-speed rail, currently unavailable in Australia. This addition supports national infrastructure goals and reduces reliance on imports.

The hydrogen-based DRI technology will help decarbonize the steel supply chain. Greensteel aims to lead innovation in clean steel solutions and deliver long-term value through sustainable practices.

Government Support for Green Projects in Australia

This project aligns with the federal push for green industrial growth. The government recently launched the Green Iron investment fund worth $636 million, backing projects that reduce emissions and modernize the resource sector.

By focusing on green energy integration and private-sector collaboration, the fund strengthens Australia’s leadership in low-carbon metal production.

Greensteel’s initiative sets a new benchmark for industrial transformation. With advanced equipment and a strong local workforce, the plant positions the country as a rising hub for eco-friendly steel.
